One of the best things about running and jogging is that it can be done with a minimum amount of equipment. You need a pair of shorts and a pair of shoes, and that’s about it.
It can be done anywhere. You’ll see runners in almost every situation. You can run in the city, you can run in the country, you can run in the mountains or at the beach. You can run by yourself, or you can run with a group. Anytime your feet are on dry land, you can go for a run. All you need is a pair of shoes and some free time and you can go for a run.
Where You Run
Do you mostly hit the road? Do you run indoors on a treadmill or track? Do you prefer trails and gravel paths? Shoes have come a long way in the past few decades. It used to be that one pair of trainers or “tennis shoes” would serve all your athletic needs.
That’s not true today. There are shoes designed for almost every possible surface. Some shoes are designed to run on roads or hard flat surfaces, while others are better for trails and off-road tracks.
Road Running Shoes
Road running shoes are designed for pavement with occasional jaunts onto packed surfaces with slight irregularities.
They are light and flexible. They are designed to cushion or stabilize your feet during repetitive strides on unforgiving hard surfaces.
Road running shoes have flatter, smoother soles to create a consistent surface that comes in contact with the ground or pavement.
Some of the very best road running shoes are put out by Asics.
Trail Running Shoes
These shoes are designed for off-road routes with rocks, mud, roots and other obstacles. They have cleats on the outsole for good grip on uneven terrain.
They can be beefed up with plates inserted in the sole to protect your feet from rocks or other sharp objects.
These shoes are usually stiffer and less flexible than road running shoes. This gives better support on trails and uneven surfaces.
Foot Strike
How does your foot hit the ground when you run? Your foot is built to roll inward slightly when your heel hits the ground and then springs forward. This is called neutral pronation. It helps you absorb impact and relieves pressure on knees and joints.
Overpronation is when your foot rolls inward excessively. If you overpronate you want a shoe designed to provide more stability. These are called motion control shoes and are designed in such as way as to help correct and prevent your foot from rolling too far to the inside.
Supination occurs when your foot rolls outward when it hits the ground. Look for signs of uneven wear along the outside of your current shoes. If you have this problem, you want shoes with more cushion and flexibility.
Getting the right pair of shoes helps you enjoy running more, lets you put in more miles, and can help prevent serious injury.
